Recommended Age: 9 +

Duration: 3 blocks per year (one block per school term)

Skills Required: Ability to follow instructions, and an interest in designing, building and creating. No previous coding, electronics or 3D design experience is required.

Type of Coding: Block-based programming or MicroPython, depending on the project, hardware and learner's experience.

Equipment: Learners must bring their own laptop and mouse.

Overview

This project-based course introduces learners to engineering design through hands-on challenges and real-world projects. Working in teams, learners will design, prototype and build interactive products using 3D design, 3D printing, electronics, physical computing, coding and AI tools. Throughout the year, they will develop creativity, problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills while contributing to longer-term group projects that are showcased at the end of the programme.

Materials and Project Components

All electronics, components and materials required during workshop sessions are provided by First Step Robotics. Learners may be given the opportunity to keep completed projects. Where this is possible, parents or guardians will be asked to cover the cost of components, materials and manufacturing.Learners may showcase their work and contributions as part of their personal portfolio.

Important Information

3D printing is a shared resource and print times can vary significantly depending on the size and complexity of a model. It may not be possible to print every learner's design during the same session, and larger projects may require multiple printing sessions.
