Participation requires commitment, accountability, teamwork, and adherence to this policy.

2. Application Process
All applications must be completed and submitted by a parent or legal guardian.
Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Submission of an application does not automatically guarantee placement on a competition team.
Team selection will be confirmed once formal preparation for a competition cycle begins.
Placement is subject to:
◦Age eligibility (8–16 years)

◦Available capacity

3. Attendance & Commitment
Competition requires consistent attendance and active participation.
Members are expected to:
  • Attend scheduled training sessions regularly.
  • Inform the organisation in advance if unable to attend.
  • Complete assigned team tasks within agreed timeframes.
  • Contribute constructively to team discussions and design processes.

  • Demonstrate behaviour that disrupts team progress.
  • Do not meet agreed commitment standards.
Removal decisions will be made in the best interest of the team and competition preparation.

4. Fundraising Responsibilities
Participation in robotics competitions incurs operational costs, including but not limited to:
  • Registration fees
  • Equipment and replacement parts
  • Travel and venue costs
  • Training materials
  • All competition team members are expected to:
  • Actively participate in organised fundraising activities.
  • Support sponsorship initiatives where appropriate.

First Step Robotics CIC aims to maintain accessibility and affordability.
However, it may become necessary to charge a participation fee to cover essential competition-related costs.
Where applicable:
  • Fees will be communicated clearly and in advance.
  • Payment deadlines will be provided.

6. Code of Conduct
All members must:
  • Show respect to teammates, mentors, and volunteers.
  • Handle equipment responsibly.
  • Follow safety instructions at all times.
  • Uphold the reputation of First Step Robotics CIC during events and public engagements.

Role Allocation & Competition Participation Policy

This policy forms part of the Competition Robotics Club terms and applies to all students aged 8–16 accepted into the programme.

1. Acceptance Does Not Guarantee Specific Competition Roles

Acceptance into the Competition Robotics Club does not guarantee participation in a specific competition role, including but not limited to:

  • Driver
  • Loader
  • Autonomous programmer
  • Match strategist
  • Engineering notebook presenter
  • Pit support
  • Any other competition-related role

Role allocation is determined based on:

  • Demonstrated technical ability
  • Reliability and attendance
  • Teamwork and communication skills
  • Performance in training sessions
  • Competition readiness

All decisions are made in the best interest of the team and competition performance.

2. Role Assignment Authority

All competition roles are assigned by the appointed coach(es).

Role decisions are:

  • Based on merit and suitability
  • Subject to change during the season
  • Made to support overall team development
  • Parents and guardians must not interfere with or attempt to influence role allocation decisions.

Concerns may be raised respectfully through formal communication channels, but final decisions rest with the coaching team.

3. Student-Led Competition Model

The Competition Robotics Club operates under a student-led model, aligned with the principles of programmes.

Students lead design, programming, strategy, and presentation.

Coaches act as mentors and facilitators.

Coaches provide guidance, structure, and safeguarding oversight.

Coaches do not build or programme the robots for students.

This approach develops independence, leadership, accountability, and real-world engineering capability.

4. Behavioural Expectations

Students are expected to:

  • Respect all role decisions.
  • Support teammates regardless of assigned role.
  • Demonstrate professionalism during training and competition.
  • Accept feedback constructively.

Parents/guardians are expected to:

  • Support the student-led structure.
  • Encourage resilience and teamwork.
  • Respect coaching decisions.
  • Maintain positive conduct at competitions and training sessions.

5. Commitment to Fairness & Development

Roles may rotate where appropriate to support development; however, competition readiness and team performance remain the priority.

The objective of the Competition Robotics Club is:

  • Long-term skill development
  • Team cohesion
  • Engineering excellence
  • Character building
  • Participation is about growth, not entitlement.
